Courier pay after costs

What did your round really pay?

Gross pay is not what you take home. Knock off van rent, fuel and the other costs of the shift and you see the real hourly rate — before tax.

Last checked 2026-09 Before tax · Not tax advice

A day rate of £130 looks like £13 an hour until the van and diesel come off. Flex-style block pay does the same trick: three blocks at £45 is £135 until you count the miles. This calculator is for that moment at the end of a multi-drop round, when you want a straight answer you can paste into a group chat.

Nothing is saved in the browser. Type the round in front of you. The numbers update as you go.

What counts as a cost

Put on this round what you actually spent to do it. Van rent for the day (or a sixth of a weekly hire). Fuel for the miles you drove, not a guess from last week. Parking, tolls, a meal you only bought because of the shift, a missing-parcel deduction if it landed today.

Leave off tax, National Insurance, and things that sit across the year — insurance, servicing, the phone contract — unless you have already worked out a fair slice for this one day. This tool will not do that for you. It is a round calculator, not a Self Assessment.

Your time is not a cost line. That is what the £ per hour is for.

Track this every shift in Rydealog

Retyping last night’s fuel into a webpage gets old. Rydealog keeps hours, miles, earnings and costs on the shift they belong to, so you can see what the round actually paid without doing the sum again.

FAQs

Does this calculator include tax?

No. The figure is what's left after van rent, fuel and any other costs you type in, before tax and National Insurance. It is not tax advice. Check HMRC guidance or ask an accountant before you file.

How do you work out fuel from MPG?

UK miles per gallon, using the imperial gallon (4.54609 litres). Litres used = miles ÷ MPG × 4.54609. Fuel cost = litres × price per litre. If you already know what you put in, switch to fuel in pounds and skip MPG.

How is weekly van rent counted for one round?

A week is counted as six working days, which is a common multi-drop pattern. £210 a week is £35 on this round. If you work a different week, enter a day rate instead.

Is multi-drop worth it after van rent and fuel?

Only the round in front of you can answer that. A day rate that looks fine on the offer sheet can be thin once the van and diesel come off. Type the real hours and miles, not the depot's estimate.

How do I track this every shift?

Rydealog logs hours, miles, earnings and costs against the shift they belong to, so you see what the round actually paid without retyping it each night. Free to start; earnings and costs are on Pro.

Notes

Last checked 2026-09. Fuel uses the UK gallon (4.54609 litres, Weights and Measures Act 1985). This page does not use HMRC mileage rates and does not tell you what you can claim. Check HMRC simplified expenses or ask an accountant.
