Best apps for UK delivery drivers

There isn’t one app that does the whole day. Pair a mileage tracker for tax, a route planner only if you set your own stop order, a maps app to drive, something for stop info and proof, and a tax or accounts tool to file.

How to choose

Drivers don’t need twelve apps. They need the right two or three. Start from the job, not the App Store chart.

  • Mileage / tax log — contemporaneous miles for simplified expenses. Not the same as “hours on shift”.
  • Route planning — only if you get a pile of addresses and have to pick the order. Skip it if the depot or platform already sequences the round.
  • Navigation — getting from this street to the next. Maps show the building, not the goods-in door.
  • Stop info, proof, shift records — entrance, parking, handover; van-check and POD photos filed by shift; hours, miles and pay together.
  • Accounting — paying HMRC, or a full books package if turnover needs it. Check HMRC guidance, or ask an accountant, before you pick a mileage method or a filing tool.

Mileage and tax

From 6 April 2026, HMRC simplified expenses for cars and goods vehicles are 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles, then 25p. Motorcycles stay at 24p. You need a contemporaneous log. These three apps exist for that job. They do not find the goods-in door, and they do not keep your van-check photos.

MileClear

Best at: unlimited UK GPS tracking with no monthly trip cap, HMRC 55p/25p/24p built in, trips grouped into shifts. The free plan is the tracker plus a Self Assessment wizard; Pro is for print-ready PDF/CSV, accountant sharing and Open Banking.

Limitation: Android is still a closed Google Play test, not a public listing. It will not tell you where to park or store a POD. Making Tax Digital submission is still in HMRC sandbox testing, not live filing.

Driversnote

Best at: automatic trip detection, including an optional iBeacon in the van so it tracks that vehicle rather than every fast movement. Mature iOS and Android apps, PDF/Excel reports, and a Teams product if you ever need that — most owner-drivers won’t.

Limitation: the free tier is 15 reportable trips a month, which a multi-drop day can wipe out. Paying on the UK App Store (£10/mo or £104.99/yr) costs more than the website’s £8/mo excl. tax. It is an international mileage product, not a UK courier day app.

PocketReceipt

iOS · Android Free 10 AI scans/mo · Essential £4.99 · Professional £7.99

Best at: snapping fuel, parking and vehicle receipts and mapping them to Self Assessment boxes, with GPS or manual mileage on the same record. Stronger than a pure mile-counter if your costs are a shoebox of till rolls.

Limitation: it is a record-keeping and export tool. It does not submit tax returns or connect to HMRC. The free plan caps AI scans at 10 a month; cloud backup of receipt images sits on paid plans.

Route planning

Use this group if you choose the order of drops. If Amazon Flex, the DSP or the depot already sequences the round, skip it. Rydealog does not belong here: we do not reorder stops.

Spoke Route Planner (formerly Circuit)

Best at: pasting or scanning a long address list and getting a driving order in one tap, then handing each leg to Google Maps, Waze or Apple Maps. The UK App Store still lists the old Circuit URL; same app, new name.

Limitation: free is capped at 10 stops per route — not enough for a real multi-drop round. Paid Lite/Standard is the product. It will not tell you which door is goods-in, and it is not your proof folder.

Routeonic

Best at: a driver-built logbook — stops, parcels, hours, and a calculator for the stops-per-hour you need to finish on time. That is useful pace discipline on a known round. UK company: Route Runner Ltd.

Limitation: this is not Spoke. It does not claim to reorder a hundred addresses on a map. We confirmed the Google Play listing. We could not load a live UK App Store page for the ID quoted by catalogues (6751884433) on 13 September 2026, so treat the iOS prices as store-copy until you see them in Apple’s listing.

Stop info, proof and shift records

This is the job Rydealog is built for: know the stop before you get there, and keep proof of the drop and the van against that shift. It is not a substitute for MileClear or Spoke.

Best at: entrance, parking and handover tips from public data and other drivers; private access notes that stay on your phone; van-check and POD photos filed by shift; hours, miles, earnings and costs on the same round. Independent — not linked to any courier company.

Limitation — where we are the wrong pick: no Android yet. We do not optimise stop order (use Spoke if that is the job). We are not a dedicated HMRC mileage logbook (use MileClear, Driversnote or PocketReceipt). We do not file your Self Assessment (use the HMRC app to pay, GOV.UK or an accountant to file). Shift planning and history are free; tips, earnings tools and van checks are Pro.

Accounting

Mileage apps produce numbers. These tools talk to HMRC, or keep full books. Most drivers need the HMRC app plus records. A paid accounts package is for when turnover, VAT or Making Tax Digital means a spreadsheet will not do. This is not tax advice.

HMRC app

iOS · Android Free

Best at: the official account in your pocket — National Insurance number, UTR, what you owe, Self Assessment payments and reminders. Download from the GOV.UK guidance page.

Limitation: you still file the tax return online on GOV.UK. The app helps you pay and check figures; it is not a mileage log and it is not bookkeeping.

FreeAgent

Web · iOS · Android Sole trader £19/mo or £190/yr excl. VAT

Best at: UK-first books with Self Assessment and Making Tax Digital filing from the same product. Free if you hold an eligible NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland or Ulster Bank business current account, or a Mettle account with at least one transaction a month.

Limitation: paid list price is several times a mileage app. Receipt capture is 10 a month unless you add Smart Capture (£5 + VAT). It will not help at the stop.

QuickBooks

Web · iOS · Android Sole Trader Plus £10/mo + VAT · Simple Start £16/mo + VAT

Best at: bank feeds and receipt capture for a sole trader who wants proper books without jumping straight to a limited-company plan. Sole Trader Plus is the cheap tier for traders who are not VAT-registered.

Limitation: VAT returns need Simple Start or above. Intro discounts (for example 90% off for six months) come and go — budget the ongoing price. Same as FreeAgent: not a courier day app.

What is the best app for UK delivery drivers?

There isn’t one. Use a mileage tracker for tax miles, a route planner only if you set your own stop order, a maps app to actually drive, something for stop info and proof, and a tax or accounts tool to file. Rydealog covers stop tips, van checks, PODs and shift records. It is not a route optimiser and it is not on Android yet.

Is Rydealog a mileage tracker or a route planner?

No. Rydealog logs miles against a shift and keeps stop tips, van-check photos and PODs with that shift. For a dedicated HMRC mileage logbook use MileClear, Driversnote or PocketReceipt. For reordering a long drop list use Spoke (formerly Circuit). Rydealog does not optimise stop order.

Which mileage app should I use for Self Assessment?

If you want unlimited UK tracking without a monthly trip cap, MileClear’s free plan does that. Driversnote’s free tier stops at 15 trips a month. PocketReceipt is stronger if you also scan fuel and parking receipts. None of them files your return. Check HMRC guidance, or ask an accountant, before you pick a mileage method.

Do I need a route planner if my courier already sends a route?

Often no. If the depot or platform already sequences your drops, a paid optimiser is extra money. Spoke is for drivers who get a pile of addresses and have to choose the order. Routeonic is a logbook and stops-per-hour calculator, not a stop-order optimiser.

Is Rydealog on Android?

Not yet. Rydealog is iPhone only. Android is coming. If you need Android today, use the other apps on this page for mileage, routing, maps and accounts.
